Prof. Ayub Gitau, Dean School of Engineering
The School of Engineering (SOE) is one of the three (3) Schools and one Institute that constitute the College of Architecture and Engineering (CAE), University of Nairobi. The School is the oldest in the University, having started way back in April 1956 as then Royal Technical College, which evolved into the University of Nairobi by 1970. In 1963 through University of East Africa Act 1962, it was renamed Faculty of Engineering and became the first engineering Faculty in East Africa. It consisted of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Land Surveying, with the Department of Agricultural Engineering being set up in 1976. In the year 2003, through a programme of restructuring in the University, the name "Faculty of Engineering" was changed to "School of Engineering", consisting of the following Departments;
- Department of Civil and Construction Engineering,
- Department of Electrical and Information Engineering,
- Department of Environmental and Biosystems Engineering.
- Department of Geospatial and Space Technology
- Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering,
- Department of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering
All the Departments offer a five year undergraduate study program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in the respective fields of study namely;
- Bsc. in Civil Engineering
- Bsc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Bsc. in Biosystems Engineering
- Bsc. in Geospatial Engineering
- Bsc. in Mechanical Engineering
- Bsc. in Petroleum and Chemical Engineering
They also offer a Master of Science degree running for two years as well as PhD programmes for three years respectively namely;
- PhD. in Civil Engineering
- PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- PhD in Environmental and Biosystems Engineering
- Phd in Geospatial Engineering
- PhD. in Mechanical Engineering
- PhD. in Energy Management
- Msc. in Civil Engineering
- Msc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Msc. in Environmental and Biosystems Engineering
- Msc. In Mechanical Engineering
- Msc. in Energy Management
- Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Management
- Msc in Geographical Information Systems
Because of its history and position as the premier School of Engineering in the country and the region, the School has an inherent role to provide leadership in the domain of engineering education and training. The School is undertaking this role in the context of rapid population growth, economic development and changing technology especially in ICT. This dynamic environment has brought about new opportunities and challenges. The School must continuously appreciate these challenges and opportunities and adequately align itself to the changing environment, hence the need for strategic planning.
