Overview
The courses are intended for candidates with suitable qualifications who wish to study further or expand their range of expertise. The course contents will enable participants to specialise in one of the following four programmes:

Industrial Engineering

Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering

Applied Mechanics

Thermo-fluids Engineering
The detailed syllabus for each course is given below. A successful candidate will be able to proceed with further studies and research work leading to a doctor of Philosophy Degree, or join a design and development, research, management manufacturing etc team in a suitable organization or industry.
The elective courses offered in a given year will depend on the availability of teaching staff, funding for scholarships and a minimum number of applicants for each course.
Structure

The course(s) shall consist of course work (lectures, seminars, assignments and laboratory work) and examinations and theses.

The programme shall commence at the beginning of the Academic Year and continue for a minimum of 21 months. The programme duration shall be divided as follows:
PART I: Course Work and Examinations 9 months
PART II: Research Project and Thesis Presentations 12 months
Part I of the programme shall be divided into two semesters of equal duration.

A candidate must satisfy the examiners in the Course Work and Examination section before proceeding to PART II of the programme. Notwithstanding this regulation, a candidate shall identify a suitable research project and start relevant literature search etc. during the PART I of the programme.

Each candidate shall give at least three seminars during the duration of the period of study. At least one of these seminars shall constitute part of the coursework for the course FME 692: Research Methodology.

Each candidate shall take five (5) course units in each of the two semester.

Admission Requirements
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering(Applied Mechanics)
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
An Upper Second Class Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering or an appropriate branch of Engineering from the University of Nairobi or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university. Candidates with other appropriate academic qualifications and professional experiences may also be considered on a case by case basis.

Exam Regulations
Exam Regulations
The common regulations for the Masters degree in all Faculties shall apply. The examination shall consist of the following two parts:
Written Examinations
1.1. Each course shall, unless otherwise stated, be examined by a final written paper lasting three hours at the end of each semester.
1.2. Assessment shall be based on the semester examination in each course which shall account for 70% and continuous assessment for 30% of the total marks.
1.3. The pass mark for each course shall be 50%.
1.4. A candidate shall be permitted to proceed to Part II only after passing all Part I courses.
1.5. A candidate who fails in any course may be permitted to re-sit or retake the failed course up to two times during the next regular semester examinations
1.6. The pass mark obtained after a re-sit examination shall be recorded as 50 % in the candidates transcript while that for a retake shall be the mark obtained at the said sitting.
1.7. A candidate who fails a second re-sit or retake or fails to complete the programme within the prescribed period shall, on recommendation of the Faculty Board of examiners and approval by senate be discontinued.
